0: A New Age of Science?

Is a New Science really necessary? What's wrong with the traditional perspective? What can a new scientifc perspective provide that Traditional Science can't? This article provides some answers to these questions.

We first examine the limits of the traditional perspective. By providing historical context we attempt to show that traditional Science, while providing marvelously, or even miraculously, for our external needs, has ignored our internal needs. Further, this exclusive, external, matter-based (should we say materialist) focus has led to the pervasive and fatalistic philosophy of scientific determinism.

Emerging from this traditional scientific perspective has come a new scientific perspective based in the same rigorous methodology and criteria. In contrast to the traditional focus, the focus of the New Science is upon how to maximize our inner potentials by employing our innate potential for informed choice. Many scientists from a diversity of disciplines have already written books from this fresh perspective. The fields attempting to embrace this much-needed viewpoint include cognitive science, biology, chemistry, psychology, and even business.

Our humble, yet perhaps ambitious, endeavor attempts to add mathematics to the mix of scientific perspectives, whose aim is to provide information that will enable us to make informed choices that will maximize our potentials. With this intent in mind, this new mathematics characterizes the Momentum of the Moment. The momentum of the moment is of huge importance in wide variety of human expressions including: sports, artistic inspiration, education, business, and interpersonal communication.

1. Information Dynamics: An Introduction

The previous article in the stream explored how a new scientific perspective based upon our potential for informed choice is emerging. Our endeavor attempts to add mathematics to the mix of scientific perspectives with this empowering approach. This article provides an overview of Information Dynamics, our name for this immense mathematical project.

It begins by stressing how one equation, the Living Algorithm, provides the entire mathematical foundation for the whole shebang. This simple algorithm (procedure) only employs the operations of basic math. Yet we claim that this one equation, the Living Algorithm, provides a method of information processing that is employed by living systems. Because living systems employ this method, they are subject to the information patterns generated by the Living Algorithm. As such, the patterns of this basic unit have had a huge effect upon the development of our biology as well as our behavior. As might be imagined, this outrageous claim requires copious support. That is the function of the rest of the articles in the stream.

There are many mathematical models (information patterns) to be derived from the one Living Algorithm, but one of these, the Triple Pulse, has abundant experimental evidence to support the correspondences between mathematics and behavior. Accordingly, we chose to focus upon the development of this model in this sequence of articles.

This particular article also provides a theoretical overview and a brief history of my Person's lifelong relationship with this material.

2: Creative Pulse Project: Context & Method

Creative Pulse Project: The Context

The Creative Pulse Project is one of the 4 branches of the Mathematics of Behavior. It, in turn, has three branches - the Creative Pulse, the Triple Pulse, & Quantized Behavior. Each is based upon mathematically generated graphs. The insights derived from these graphs are based in accidental after-the-fact analysis, not deliberate intention. Due to the revolutionary nature of the underlying concepts, it has taken my Person's entire lifetime to develop and understand the project. The CP Project is a math-based behavioral technology with scientific underpinnings. As such, the significance of the Creative Pulse technology lies in its utility.

CP Method: Computer-generated Graphs

To understand the CP technology it is essential to first understand the method. An unusual feature of the methodology of the Creative Pulse Project is that it is entirely based upon graphs. The visual nature of Creative Pulse technology increases its accessibility, and thereby its utility. All the graphs in the Creative Pulse Project are generated from a single computer program. This program is based in a regenerative central measure that my Person calls a Directional. This is the first directed derivative of the Living Algorithm. If the Cell equation is the mother, the Directional is her daughter. This concept was not invented to match any theory or set of data. Instead, the Directional was the neglected offspring of earlier research.

Pictorial Nature of information more accessible, testable

The pictorial nature of the information makes it more understandable. The visual aspect of the insights combined with the practical behavioral nature of the technology enables everyone to test the conclusions experientially. This turns everyone into a scientist, making the technology egalitarian, not elitist. The advantage of the CP Project is that, with a bit of explanation, the visual information derived from the graphs is accessible to all. All the graphs are centered around the Creative Pulse.

4. Triple Pulse Experiment: Methods & Results

This article delineates the method and results of the Triple Pulse Experiment – an extension of the original Creative Pulse Experiment.

Background

A computer program based upon the Living Algorithm generated the ideal Triple Pulse. The program employed a data stream consisting of a string of ‘ones’ followed by a string of ‘zeros’, which in turn was followed by another string of ‘ones’. This data stream generated the ideal Triple Pulse graph. The graph consisted of 3 pulses – the 1st, a positive ‘activity’ pulse; the 2nd, a negative ‘rest’ pulse, and the 3rd, another positive ‘activity’ pulse. The graph also contained 5 other curves, which danced around the zero line – sometimes positive and other times negative. For this reason we called them Liminals as a group. In the ideal Triple Pulse all curves approached zero at the end of each pulse.

Part 1: How Interruptions to the ‘Rest’ Pulse reduce the next 'Activity’ Pulse

Part 1 of the Triple Pulse experiment consisted of introducing ‘interruptions’ (a string of 5 ‘ones’) into the ‘rest’ pulse (the string of ‘zeros’) at a variety of locations. The conclusions were clear. 'Interruptions' in the 'rest' pulse diminish the following 'activity' pulse, even though his input remains the same.(A shocking, yet unexplained factoid: the impact upon the area and amplitude of the Pulse is identical.) Why is the final yang pulse affected by what happens to the preceding yin pulse? What is the mechanism behind this odd experimental result? Due to the introduction of extra 'energy' to the 'rest' pulse, interruptions created a disturbance in the Liminals. Because they hadn't had time to settle down, they interfered with the natural development of the following 'activity' pulse. The mathematical conclusion is clear. To maximize the final 'activity' pulse, all elements of the 'rest' pulse must be settling towards zero - zeroing out.

Part 2: The Head Start Experiment

Part 2 of the Triple Pulse experiment consisted of giving the 3rd ‘activity’ pulse a head start. This meant that he began his cycle of 'ones' before the preceding ‘rest’ pulse of zeros had ended. Neither the Pulse nor the Liminals had a chance to completely zero out. These 'experiments' showed that as this intrusion upon the natural cycle of the 2nd ‘rest pulse increased, the peak and breadth of the 3rd ‘activity’ pulse shrank. It was clearly evident that the ‘head start’, which occurred at the expense of the preceding ‘rest’ cycle. had a negative impact on the potential dimensions of both the ‘activity’ and the ‘rest’ pulse.

5. Triple Pulse Experiment: Inferences & Patterns

Inferences of Patterns

In the initial Interruption experiment the yang pulse was chosen to represent the concentrated energy of a creative session. By extension the original assumption for the Sleep Experiment was that the 1st & 3rd yang pulses represented activity, while the 2nd yin pulse represented inactivity. Due to the perceived parallels with experience, the Yang Pulses are now associated with conscious awareness and attention, while Yin Pulse is associated with rest and sleep. As an example of moral relativism, the zeros are ‘evil’ when they interrupt the surge of the yang pulse, and ‘good’ when they act to refresh and revitalize the yang pulse by providing a break. In the Sleep Experiment, the Triple Pulse was considered the ideal because the amplitudes of the yang and yin pulses were maximized by the choice of data stream. When we tampered with the order the amplitudes were diminished. Due to the results of the 'experiment', the original inference was that a complete break was necessary to refresh the creative cycle. ‘Let go of the daily project after completion to maximize next day’s work.’ Personal experience confirmed the inference. After letting the experimental results stew for nearly a decade, the parallels with the Sleep/Wake cycle became apparent. The inferences from both phases of the experiment were similar. Both an interrupted and a shortened Sleep Cycle impairs the work potentials for the following day. As the 3rd pulse (the awake cycle) was not tampered with in any way, the meta-inference was that sleep deprivation diminishes the ensuing day's potentials, independent of interruptions or lack of energy. In the final graph the 'head start' on the day absorbed the entire second (yin) pulse and the entire third pulse disappeared as well. If the attention of living systems is held by the acceleration of the velocity of the awareness 'ones'. As the Brain processes information its attention is drawn to, attracted by, held onto, stuck to, anything that accelerates. This includes visual, auditory, sensory or intellectual input. The data stream of information is processed in a linear fashion. Due to the give and take feature of living systems, the information comes in digitized form – to enable continuous alternation of stimulus and response - to maintain balance, temperature control, et al. If processed by the Living Algorithm and her family, this flow of digitized information has a running average, an acceleration, a thrust, an impluse, et al. One version of these measures, arguably the simplest, is revealed when the raw data stream is digested by the Living Algorithm and her family of self-referential, regenerative equations. The Directional is a central measure representing directed acceleration. If consciousness is drawn to acceleration then it is drawn to the Directional of a data stream. The Creative Pulse is the picture, self-portrait if you will (we just plugged in the data - she was always there), of the data stream of Directionals generated by the raw data stream of 120 'ones'. This acceleration (the attentional intensity?) inherently manifests as a pulse which fades out naturally. Based upon the assumptions that the magnitude of the Directional stream accurately reflects attentional intensity and that attentional intensity reflects the ability to focus, the inferenece is clear. It is impossible to sustain directed attention indefinitely. Sustain attention has a pulse which rises and falls and must be refreshed by a lack of attention (sleep), or a shift of attention, to reestablish itself. These inferences lead to the Creative Pulse Theory: Sleep is a mathematical necessity, not physical or psychological. This is due to the information processing nature of living systems. Scientizing the vocabulary is an essential feature of theorizing – defining the terms to reflect the experimental results. In this experiment the ones of the Attentional cycle become a tendency towards Order & Organization, while the zeros of the Sleep cycle become the opposite tendence towards Chaos & Entropy. Under this model Order and Chaos, Organization and Entropy, are needed to refresh and generate each other. Another feature: the deceleration of the Negative Pulse is the key to refreshing the acceleration of the Positive Pulse. Theory 2: non-attentional deceleration is necessary to refresh attentional acceleration. Naps are necessary to refresh the day's yang pulse - with naps, in this context being any activity shifts attention completely from the prime activity, as well as decelerating any of the underlying urges - the higher order Directionals. Under this way of thinking a short catnap refreshes a longer activity pulse.
